This amazing 3 Days safari from Dar es Salaam to Selous, in southern Tanzania will take to the largest Game reserve in the whole of Africa – the Selous Game Reserve. The reserve covers an area of over 50,000 square kilometers, making it larger than Switzerland and Denmark, as well as three (3) times larger than the popular Serengeti National Park found in Northern Tanzania. The Selous has since been gazetted as a fully fledged national park in Tanzania and therefore now manned and managed by Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA).

3-Day safari to Selous from Dar es Salaam, Where to visit?

The Selous Game Reserve is the most popular of Tanzania’s southern tourist destinations, and it supports very large numbers of animals including: half Tanzania’s total elephant population (about 30,000 elephants), approximately 200, 000 buffaloes and nearly 80,000 wildebeests, vervet monkeys, giraffes, impalas, colobus monkeys, sable, hartebeests, elands, kudus, and baboons. It is also home to the largest population of the African wild dogs a species that is highly in danger-of-extinction most of which you will see during your game drives conducted in our nice four wheel drive (4X4) safari vehicles.  The safari will begin and end in Dar es Salaam.

Where to stay during the 3 Days Selous safari (Nyerere National Park)

This 3 days adventure the the famous Selous, now Nyerere National Park is a midrange safari. Accommodation therefore will be nin nice modest lodges or tented camps as per the detailed itinerary on the next tab. In this package we have included the Selous Mapumziko Lodge a nice mid-range lodge with great value for money. The lodge rooms come in two styles; the african traditional mud huts and the tented rooms. The mud huts are well finished in the inside and some even come with a functional Air conditioning.   You can choose which rooms you like in advance and we will confirm as per your preference.


This 3-day safari in Selous Game Reserve starts and ends at Dar es Salaam but we can also arrange the same safari starting and ending at Zanzibar Island, with flights included from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam or direct flights from Zanzibar to Selous Game Reserve and back to Zanzibar Island. 3-day safari in Selous Game Reserve – Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Transfer from Dar es Salaam to Selous (Nyerere National Park

Pick up this morning from your hotel or residence in Dar es Salaam, by your safari guide and you will start on your way straightaway to the Selous Game Reserves.  You will be taking the newly gravelled road that goes through Kisarawe  because it is shorter. Once at the lodge, you will check-in and settle in before having  hot lunch at your lodge or camp.

After lunch and a short rest you will be taken to the jetty, where you will have a boat ride safari on famous River Rufiji as a way of relaxing and having an introduction to this great wildlife habitat. You will encounter some hippos, crocodiles and various birds during this ride. If lucky you might see some animal action as a crocodile hunts down its prey.

Later in the evening, you will return to you accommodation, relax by the campfire, have dinner and spend the night there. Dinner and overnight will be at Selous Mapumziko Lodge. Lunch and dinner included. 

Day 2

Explore Selous Game Reserve

Today is fully dedicated to exploring the vast plains of the Selous Game reserve which was named after a renowned early European explorer – Fredrick Selous. After an early breakfast at the lodge, you will be met by your safari guide/driver and then set out on game drives in our four wheel drive safari vehicle. Considering the fact that this reserve covers an area of 54,600 sq km, it is believed to be among the largest unspoiled wilderness on the African continent, a reason for which it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.

While on the game drives you will explore the different wildlife habitats (that vary from rolling savannah grassland plains, savannah woodlands and rocky out crops that are believed to have been cut by the Rufiji River) as you search for Africa’s Big Five animals and the other different species that live here among which are: lions, zebras, elands, impalas, buffalos, bushbucks, elephants, oryxs, crocodiles, waterbucks, hippos, sable antelopes, klipspringers, pukus, duikers, giraffes, greater kudus, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, as well as the occasional leopards and spotted hyenas, not forgetting the largest thriving population of the endangered wild dogs. Rhinos on the other hand, can only be seen within the southern part of the game reserve. Your driver / guide will be able to stop whenever you want to enable you take as many photographs as you want; so don’t leave your camera behind. The Selous will not disappoint bird lovers as well, as there are very many bird species found here some living within the forest, the river banks as well as in the swampy areas. Later on in the evening, you will head back to the lodge for campfire where you will sit around as you sip your favourite drink. Overnight at the Selous Mapumziko Lodge. All meals included.

Day 3

Walking Safari in Selous, Depart to Dar es Salaam

Breakfast at the lodge then you will go for a morning walking safari with a local guide at the banks of the Selous Game Reserve and can also go for a cultural walk in the neighbouring villages.

(Alternatively – at extra park fees,  you may go for  last game drive at the Selous Game Reserve.)

Afterwards, your driver will transfer you to back to Dar es Salaam for your onward travel. Drop off at your hotel or at the Dar es Salaam International Airport if flying to Zanzibar or back home.
