This short safari package takes you to Mikumi National Park which is a beautiful pack located about 280 Kilometers from Dar es Salaam; the commercial capital of Dar es Salaam along the Tanzam Highway (T1) that links Tanzania and neighboring Zambia. The highway literally crosses the Mikumi National Park between Morogoro and Iringa regions, making it a common thing to sight animals like elephants, Giraffes, Gazelles and even sometimes lions along the Highway.

Mikumi National Park lies between the beautiful Uluguru and Lumango Mountains offering great views from the park.  Udzungwa Mountains National Park is also just nearby, a one-hour drive from Mikumi.

The park can be accessed both by road and by air, but there is currently no frequent flights to the park, and therefore one must book as early as possible. The park can be visited any time of the year including April & May.

What to see during the 3 days safari in Mikumi National Park.

The park is gifted with a rich diversity if wildlife including; very large schools of hippos commonly seen in the mud pools and several herbivores which you can see during the exciting game drives. Common sightings include elephant, giraffe, buffalo, Burchell’s zebra, sable, eland, Liechtenstein’s hartebeest, lion, leopard, spotted hyena, jackals, baboons, and many other animals.

3 Days Mikumi Safari from Dar es Salaam – Itinerary

Day 1

Transfer from Dar es Salaam to Mikumi National Park

Today morning you will be picked up from your hotel in Dar es Salaam, or from the Dar es Salaam international Airport by one of our representatives from Safari Desire who will brief you about your safari adventure.

The drive to Mikumi National Park take about 6 hours or less depending on the traffic on your way out of Dar es Salaam. To the south it is bordered by the renowned Selous Game Reserve, while the Uluguru Mountains and the Udzungwa mountains are on the other side, with great views from within the park.

You will arrive in the afternoon, and before you transfer to your accommodation you will have your first game drive in the park. You expect to see some of the wild animals that call Mikumi home such as; elands, giraffes, wildebeests, elephants, zebras, buffaloes, warthogs, various antelopes as well as impalas. Later on in the late afternoon you will proceed to your overnight accommodation, check-in, freshen up and have dinner. Overnight at Camp Bastian or similar. Lunch and dinner included.

Day 2

Explore Mikumi National Park

You will rise up very early in the morning, have breakfast and then set out for a game drive in the unspoilt wilderness of Mikumi National Park. This entire day is dedicated to game viewing and you guide who is very knowledgeable about the animals in this park will drive you to areas that will offer you best game views. The pop-up roof on your car will give you uninterrupted opportunities for game viewing and photography.

The park covers an area of 3230 square kilometers which makes it one of the largest national parks in Tanzania. As you explore its wilderness, some of the animals you will see include elephants, hartebeests, buffalos, kudus, zebras, elands, wildebeests and impalas, hyenas, baboons, lions, wild dogs, giraffes, warthogs and hippos are the other animals you can always look out for.

Apart from wildlife, more than three hundred (300) different types of birds have been recorded within this national park, a thing that will give you great opportunities to see them. Some of the bird species found within this park include: Boehm’s bee-eaters, African fish eagles, lilac-breasted rollers, starlings, yellow-throated longclaws, Bateleur eagles, Dickinson’s kestrels and straw-tailed whydahs.

You will explore the varied wildlife habitats which include the seasonal floodplains, the grassland which are scattered with giant baobab trees and thorny trees (these are very similar to those in the Serengeti), Miombo woodlands, swamps, riverine forests and low hills.

You have the option of doing safari game drives until later in the afternoon then proceed back to the lodge for late lunch then relax at your lodge with options to swim at the swimming pool, or do a full day safari in Mikumi with lunch taken a tone of the nice picnic sites.

In the late afternoon you will head back to your accommodation where you will have your dinner and spend the night. Overnight at Camp Bastian or similar. All meals included.

Day 3

Morning Game Drive, Drive back to Dar es Salaam

This is the final day of our 3 Days Safari Mikumi Safari. Early in the morning, you will have a hearty breakfast, and if time allows, you will have one final game drive in the park, before your safari guide / driver transfers you back to Dar es Salaam where this amazing safari started and now ends.
